About the community
Welcome to WA ROCKS & WA ROCKS Kindness Bag Project (Australia)
The group combine creativity and outdoor play for people of every age and ability. Hunt for painted rocks in your neighbourhood park, explore new places, or paint your own and hide them for others to find and enjoy.
WA ROCKS is among the largest groups of its kind worldwide. The group’s members now span the group’s beautiful state from top to bottom, including numerous rural communities. The group thank Palmy Rocks, NZ, whose original inspiration made the creation of WA ROCKS possible.
People interested can paint a rock?
- Choose rocks that are clean, dry and unpolished—not glass rocks, bricks or similar items.
- Acrylic paints and permanent markers give the best results, although any material that can be sealed is suitable. Do not attach additions such as eyes, beads or gems.
- Before release, every rock must be sealed so it withstands the weather.
- On the back, write “WA ROCKS” and add the [f] Facebook symbol, then seal that side. This tells finders what to do and how to locate the group.
- Do not put any other tag on the reverse of the rock.
People interested can find a rock?
Use the search bar at the top of the group page to look up your suburb or the name of a local park and check whether anything was recently hidden there. Before leaving, read the comments for updates so you do not search for a rock that has already been discovered and moved.
When a member finds a rock?
The group’s artists, admins and moderators love seeing photos of discovered creations and watching them spread joy as they move between parks. Post a picture and state where you found the rock, then choose one of these options:
- 1. Hide it again in the same location or move it elsewhere. Tell the group you found it and, once it has been hidden, post its new location on this page, including the suburb.
- 2. Keep it, and comment on the original “hide” post to let people know it is no longer there.

The group’s admins and moderators support kindness and helping people in the group’s community. This led to the Kindness Bags Project for people in WA hospitals, while the group also recognise the need to assist domestic-violence victims, older people and individual cases. Contact the admin team if you want further information or would like to donate.
