About the community
Southern Oregon Painted Rocks #SOPR is a sister group to #WCPR, which promotes random acts of kindness by giving away small pieces of art.
The concept is straightforward: paint a rock and hide or leave it for another person. Artists may publish pictures, locations and clues for their art rocks, while a lucky finder can share the discovery and its photograph with #SOPR.
How to play
- Paint or decorate a rock; acrylic paint works very well when finished with a sealing top coat.
- Write “Post on Facebook at #SOPR” on the reverse.
- Publish a photo and a clue to the location, such as a park or school.
- Hide the rock for somebody else to find.
Found a rock?
- Take a photo and post it so the person who hid it knows it has been discovered. For easier tracking, add your found rock as a comment beneath the original post.
- Choose whether to keep it or hide it again.
- If you re-hide it, share a clue about its new location. Following these guidelines helps prevent confusion.
- Do not hide rocks inside or around small businesses unless you own the business; larger shopping centres should be all right.
- Every rock must be sealed and marked #SOPR. Leave any unmarked rock exactly where you discovered it.
Do not paint over or otherwise change somebody else’s work on a found rock. Respect the time and effort behind it. The sole exception is damaged art—for example, work that has chipped or become messed up—which may be touched up.
#SOPR — a few clarifications
- You are not required to re-hide a rock you find.
- You do not have to paint rocks.
- You do not have to hide rocks.
- You do not have to search for rocks.
This group exists for enjoyment. Nobody should feel that taking part in one activity obliges them to do another. Simply choose what is fun for you: keep one or several rocks you love; skip painting, searching or keeping if those things do not appeal to you; and if you enjoy every part—or only one part—please participate.
Have fun and be active in whichever aspects you enjoy!
Thank you to Coos County Rocks and the rock I discovered for the inspiration, and to #WCPR for the guidelines.
