About the community
Welcome to Reading Kindness Rocks. We paint rocks and hide them across Reading and beyond, bringing joy and making people’s days brighter.
This is a busy group. If the number of rock photographs and posts becomes overwhelming, please do not leave; disable notifications and visit the page whenever you wish.
A found rock may be kept, left where it is or hidden somewhere else. If you keep one, the idea is to create new rocks yourself and continue the joy. This community-building group inspires creativity at every age and encourages people to explore this beautiful area.
We would love to see pictures of rocks before you hide them and after you find them, although anonymous participation is also welcome. You will need rocks, acrylic paint or pens and clear varnish. When the painting is complete, write Reading Kindness Rocks on the reverse.
We want many people throughout our communities to paint so that plenty of rocks are waiting to be found. Along the way, you may rediscover local places you have not appreciated recently. Go out and enjoy yourself. Add interested friends to the group and share its link on your personal Facebook page.
Choose hiding places carefully so neither you nor anybody else faces danger. Rocks should be hidden in plain sight.
After a painted rock leaves your possession, consider it a gift and let it go. You may never see it or hear about it again. If joy depends on retaining control of it, the page’s purpose has been missed. Give solely for the sake of giving, without expecting it to be re-hidden, acknowledged or photographed. Do not become upset because its finder does not play in the way you believe they should.
If you encounter an inappropriately decorated rock, do not photograph, comment on or otherwise publicise it. Let the negativity end with you: paint over it and quietly move on.
Invite as many Facebook friends as possible. Share the group on your page, ask others to do likewise, and post its link in interested local community groups, such as parent, art and activity groups.
Let this page be not a collection of game rules, but a gathering place where we show how rocks are helping us spread joy. Thank you, everyone!
