About the community
Kindness Rocks Vancouver Island is a local community group devoted to making and releasing painted kindness rocks. Inspired by the #thekindnessrocksproject movement, it is about creativity, community and making someone’s day brighter. Remember: “one message at just the right moment, can change someone’s entire day, outlook, life.” ❤️
When you find a Kindness Rock
Take a picture, share it here, then either keep the rock or release it 🙂 You do not have to replace a rock you find. We nevertheless hope people will be inspired to paint Kindness Rocks and contribute them to the community; creating and releasing one feels as good as spotting one.
When placing or hiding Kindness Rocks
- Write “Kindness Rocks Vancouver Island” and “keep or release” on the back. If room permits, also add “post picture to facebook.”
- Use public locations, never private property.
- Do not gather painting rocks from private property, Provincial or National Parks, or railroad beds.
- Avoid grass, where lawnmowers or weed whackers could strike the rocks.
- Do not fasten objects such as googly eyes, paper or pompoms to outdoor rocks, as the aim is to limit the effect on natural environments. Items such as crystals or googly eyes may be added to a gifted rock that will stay indoors.
There is no promise that your Kindness Rocks will be discovered or shown on this page, but you will probably enjoy trying to brighten another person’s day 🙂
Frequently asked questions
What paint can be used?
Non-toxic acrylic craft paint and paint pens are suitable; inexpensive dollar-store acrylic craft paints work well.
Does the paint need sealing, and with what?
Yes, we strongly ask that painted rocks be sealed. It keeps the paint—acrylic is plastic—from peeling off and littering the environment, while also protecting your artwork. Any clear outdoor-grade sealant is suitable, whether sprayed or brushed on.
