About the community
The group welcomes new members :) Participants can paint a rock, add Facebook Dartford Painted Rocks to its back, and hide it. If you are fortunate enough to find one, you may keep your treasure or hide it again for somebody else.
Materials: A base coat such as emulsion or acrylic paint improves coverage. You can then use Posca pens — the group’s favourite — Sharpies, similar pens, or paint. Once dry, weatherproof the rock with something such as spray varnish or yacht varnish from the pound shop. Do not feel limited or think you must buy equipment before starting: use whatever you already have, including nail varnish or felt-tip pens. This activity is meant to be free fun.
No artistic talent is necessary. We enjoy seeing every creation, and anything from the simplest design to a masterpiece can make the finder smile.
Struggling to locate rocks? Streams and ploughed fields are useful places to search. Rocks are also sold by pound shops, hobby shops, and garden centres, where a sack of Scottish river pebbles costs £4 and larger cobbles cost £10. The group asks participants not to remove rocks from the beach; so many people now participate that the group could empty it!
Remember the group name on the back. If space permits, add “keep or rehide me,” and include your initials if you wish.
Decorate in any way you like, perhaps drawing inspiration from group photos. You may copy others if you want, but keep designs positive and PG-rated because you cannot know who will find them. Paint one rock or a whole collection — warning: it can become addictive.
Participants can choose any safe hiding place: a park bench, somewhere on a lovely day out, along your commute or the high street, in the office, on your own garden wall, or anywhere else you prefer. Everyone can participate!
